About the Scholarship: Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Daniel Holland, DVM represented the United States and Veterinary Medicine in an exemplary manner that set a standard few of us will ever achieve. On May 18, 2006 he gave the ultimate sacrifice – his life, while serving as a U.S. Army Civil Affairs team leader in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. LTC Holland, along with three other soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division and an Iraqi interpreter, was killed in action by an improvised explosive device (IED) while working on projects to improve the agricultural infrastructure in Iraq. LTC Holland was the first United States Army veterinarian to be lost to war since the Vietnam Conflict.
LTC Holland was a respected and experienced officer and doctor. Prior to deploying to Iraq, he served as Commander of South Plains District Veterinary Command, an area encompassing Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. He had previously served for twenty one years in numerous Army veterinary assignments in the United States and Germany, and in humanitarian missions to many other countries including Honduras, Haiti, Bosnia, and Croatia. Dan was also a beloved family man and friend to everyone he encountered. His sacrifice to our Nation is proudly remembered by his wife and two young children who currently reside in Texas.
Daniel was a tremendous supporter of the role of Continuing Education in the field of Veterinary Medicine. He attended the 2005 Southwest Veterinary Symposium and also served as a session moderator in the same year. He was a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and a member of the American VMA, the Oklahoma VMA, and the American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians. He was a 1988 graduate of Oklahoma State University, and resided in Texas at the time of his death
