About Dallas

The home of SWVS 2008! The Dallas metropolitan area is the No. 1 visitor and leisure destination in Texas and that’s why we want you to experience Dallas as you are educated at SWVS 2008. Just what makes Dallas such a great place to visit? Here are a few reasons:

  • Largest concentrated urban arts district in the US with more than 160 museums, galleries and artistic attractions.
  • More restaurants per capita than New York City!
  • Very family friendly city with a variety of activities, spectator sports and recreation activities.
  • Home of the Texas State Fair with over 3 million people in attendance - and it is open during SWVS 2008!
  • Shop till you drop! Dallas is home to the old shopping center in the US, Highland Park Village, along with the newly expanded NorthPark Center and Dallas Galleria.
  • The newest and most modern urban transportation system - the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) which connects you from SWVS hotels to the Dallas Convention Center along with many restaurant and entertainment destinations.

For more detailed information, check out "Experience Dallas, Experience the Southwest Veterinary Symposium 2008" and the official web site for the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The State Fair of Texas is located two miles east of downtown Dallas in Fair Park. The festival features an array of cooking, arts and crafts, livestock shows and auctions. Collegiate football games, headline concerts and the automobile show complete the three-week fair experience. There are two landmarks that underscore the grand scale of the fair: Big Tex and the Texas Star Ferris wheel. Big Tex is a larger than life cowboy figure converted from the world’s tallest Santa Claus. Big Tex first appeared on the fair grounds in 1952 and continues to welcome visitors in his Texas attire and booming voice. The Texas Star Ferris wheel is the tallest Ferris wheel in North America at 212 feet. Most shows and attractions are free with general admission. Food, rides and drinks operate on a coupon system. Coupons may be purchased at booths situated throughout the grounds.
